The export of Personal / Household effects is not as challenging on the shipper as it does not have duty implications whereas the import procedures draw such duty implication requiring additional paperwork to navigate the complex customs procedures. Certain goods qualify to be imported into the RSA without the payment of customs duty and VAT in terms of rebate 407.06 of schedule no 4 to the Customs and Excise Act Provided you have been out of South Africa for a period of 6 months or longer.

The following information is required to process import clearance under rebate 407.

• Detailed inventory of goods
• Form P160
• Form DA304
• Affidavit 

Please note that an importer that does not meet the above requirements may require special permission through ITAC permits for the importation of their personal or household effects. Customs inspects all items described as personal effects or Household effects which can cause clearance delays.

• Pornographic or objectionable materials
• Plants, seeds, bulbs, raw Cotton
• Uncooked meat/ poultry
• Honey, beeswax
• Uncut diamonds
• Unwrought gold
• Ammunition/ Firearms
• Alcohol
